If you will be visiting Vienna and looking for the best place to exchange your foreign currency in the capital of Austria, your best bet would be finding a money changer in the city center as exchange rates at the airport are really bad. What money changers operate in Vienna City Center and how good currency exchange rates are they offering?

When we were looking for the place to exchange currency in the touristy area of Austrian capital, we found several money changers in Vienna City Center. However, all these currency exchange offices were operated by the same company.

In the center of Vienna you can find 3 currency exchange counters of Global Exchange:

  • Laks, Karntnerstrasse 16 (between Singer and Sacher) is open daily from 09:00 to 21:00
  • Sacher Hotel, Karntnerstrasse 38 (in hotel, looking out on Karntnerstrasse) is open daily from 09:00 to 21:00
  • Singerstrasse, Singerstrasse 1A (on Stephansplatz next to Aida) is open daily from 09:00 to 21:00

USD exchange rate in Vienna

The official EUR to USD exchange rate at the time of our visit in Vienna was 1.109 US Dollar for 1 Euro, so the rate offered by Global Exchange (1.229 USD/EUR) was by 0.12 USD or 10.8% lower than the market rate.

GBP exchange rate in Vienna

The official EUR to GBP exchange rate at the time was 0.913 British Pound for 1 Euro, so the rate offered in the city center (0.949 GBP/EUR) was by 0.036 GBP or 3.9% lower than the market rate.

CAD exchange rate in Vienna

The official EUR to CAD exchange rate on the day was 1.472 Canadian Dollar for 1 Euro, so the exchange rate offered in Vienna (1.629 CAD/EUR) was by 0.157 CAD or about 10.7% lower than the market rate.

AUD exchange rate in Vienna

The official EUR to AUD exchange rate at the time was 1.636 Australian Dollar for 1 Euro, so the exchange rate offered by Global Exchange money changer (1.759 CAD/EUR) was by 0.123 CAD or about 7.5% lower than the market rate.

Is currency exchange in Vienna worth it?

Well, in Vienna City Center you can get much better currency exchange rates than at Vienna Airport. If you are choosing between exchange at the airport and exchange in the city, you should stick to exchanging your money in the center of Vienna.

However, exchange margin charged by money changers in Vienna is still quite big so exchanging money in your home country or withdrawing Euro from ATM in Vienna might be a better option.
